Droupadi Murmu confers President’s Colour on Pune AFMC

President Droupadi Murmu on Friday urged women keen on a career in the Indian Armed Forces to draw inspiration from stalwarts and alumni of Armed Forces Medical College.

“Armed Forces Medical College has earned a reputation as an institution of the highest standard in medical education and graduates of this institute have made the nation proud through their dedicated services during war, counter-insurgency operations, natural calamities and pandemics- both at home and beyond national boundaries,” she said.

President Murmu, who is also the Supreme Commander of Armed Forces, was speaking after conferring the President’s Colour on Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune, in its platinum jubilee year.

President’s Colour, also known as ‘Rashtrapati ka Nishaan’, is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon any military unit.

One of the highlights of the ceremonial parade was that women medical officers led the four contingents of the Armed Forces Medical Services personnel serving in the Army, Navy and Air Force.

In her speech, the President was happy to note that many woman cadets who have graduated from AFMC have made significant contributions to the field of armed forces and have held high positions like Lt Gen Punita Arora, the first woman in armed forces to be promoted to a three star rank, Air Marshal Padma Bandopadhyay (who was the first woman to be promoted to the rank of Air Marshal) and others. She expressed confidence that taking inspiration from them, more women will choose their career in the armed forces.

The President further spoke about the use of Artificial Intelligence, Precision medicine, 3D printing, telemedicine and other technologies in the field of medicine.
