In an era where visuals speak louder than words, few creators manage to blend storytelling, technology, and emotion as seamlessly as Ashish Mathur, Founder of Mathurgraphy. With nearly a decade of experience spanning television shows, film promotions, advertisements, fashion, corporate branding, and weddings, Ashish has carved a distinctive niche in India’s visual storytelling landscape. In this candid conversation with Sanjay Jadhav, Editor, PuneInsight, he reflects on his journey from video editing to building a versatile creative brand, shares insights into his approach across genres, and offers a thoughtful perspective on the evolving future of photography and corporate video production in India.
How did your journey into photography begin, and what inspired you to turn this passion into a full-fledged business called Mathurgraphy?
My journey into photography began organically, alongside my work as a video editor. Nearly nine years ago, while editing television shows and visual content, I became deeply curious about how a single frame could communicate emotion, story, and purpose. That curiosity slowly turned into passion when I started experimenting with cameras, lighting, and composition.
Working on TV shows for platforms like Tata Sky, Hotstar, and Airtel Fitness TV, and later on movie promos and advertisements, helped me understand the power of visuals at a professional level. Over time, I realized that photography and filmmaking were not just creative outlets for me—they were tools to create impact. That belief led to the birth of Mathurgraphy, a brand built on storytelling, versatility, and visual honesty.
You work across multiple genres—fashion, corporate, weddings, and more. How do you maintain a distinct creative identity while adapting to such diverse assignments?
For me, creativity is not limited by genre—it’s guided by intent. Whether I’m shooting fashion, a corporate event, or a wedding, my core identity remains the same: strong storytelling, clean visuals, and emotional connection.
Each genre demands a different approach, but my signature lies in how I observe people, moments, and details. My background in editing helps me visualize the final output even before the shoot begins, ensuring consistency in tone and quality across all projects while still respecting the unique needs of each assignment.
Fashion photography demands a strong visual language. How do you approach a fashion shoot to ensure the brand or individual’s personality truly stands out?
Fashion photography, for me, starts with understanding personality and purpose. Before picking up the camera, I spend time discussing the brand’s identity, the model’s comfort zone, styling, and the story we want to convey.
I focus heavily on mood, lighting, poses, and expressions. My experience with model portfolio shoots, product shoots, and fashion campaigns allows me to guide subjects confidently, ensuring the visuals feel authentic rather than forced. When the subject feels comfortable, their personality naturally reflects in the frame.
Corporate photography and videos are increasingly important in today’s digital-first world. How do you help businesses visually communicate their brand story through your work?
In today’s digital era, visuals are often the first interaction a brand has with its audience. My goal in corporate photography and video production is to translate a company’s values into visuals.
I focus on real people, real workspaces, and genuine moments—whether it’s a corporate event, promotional film, TV ad, or brand video. My experience in corporate events, advertisements, and digital content helps businesses build trust, credibility, and a strong visual presence across platforms.
Wedding photography is about capturing emotions and timeless moments. What is your philosophy when it comes to documenting weddings, and what makes your style unique?
I see weddings as unscripted stories filled with emotion, culture, and human connection. My philosophy is simple—observe quietly and capture honestly.
Rather than staging moments excessively, I focus on expressions, reactions, and fleeting emotions that couples may not even notice on their big day. My cinematic sense, developed through film editing and direction, allows me to document weddings in a way that feels timeless and emotionally rich.
Technology has transformed photography and videography significantly. How do you stay updated with the latest equipment, trends, and techniques?
Technology is constantly evolving, and staying updated is essential. I regularly explore new equipment, editing tools, shooting techniques, and digital trends. However, I strongly believe that technology is only as powerful as the person using it.
My foundation in professional editing, television production, and filmmaking allows me to adapt quickly while maintaining creative control. Learning never stops in this field, and I make it a point to evolve with every project I take on.
What role does pre-production—planning, discussions, and understanding client expectations—play in the success of a project?
Pre-production is the backbone of any successful shoot. Clear communication, planning, and understanding expectations save time and elevate the final output.
I invest significant time in discussions before every project—whether it’s a fashion shoot, corporate video, or short film. When the vision is clear, execution becomes smoother, and creativity flows more freely on set.
Can you share a particularly challenging or memorable project that pushed you creatively and professionally?
Directing and editing short films has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my career. One of my short films won an award during my college days, which gave me immense confidence early on.
Working on film promos, TV content, and creative projects with tight deadlines and high expectations has constantly pushed me to think faster, adapt better, and perform under pressure. Every challenging project has shaped me into a more disciplined and versatile creator.
For aspiring photographers and filmmakers, what skills or mindset are essential to build a sustainable career?
The most important qualities are patience, consistency, and curiosity. Skills can be learned, but mindset defines longevity. Aspiring creators should be open to learning multiple aspects of the craft—shooting, editing, direction, and even performance. My experience in theatre and acting has helped me understand emotions, body language, and storytelling on a deeper level. Most importantly, respect your work, respect your clients, and never stop evolving.
How do you see the future of photography and corporate video production evolving in India over the next few years?
The future of photography and corporate video production in India is incredibly promising. With brands shifting towards digital-first, video-driven communication, the demand for authentic, high-quality visual storytelling will only grow.
Short-form videos, brand films, and content-driven visuals will dominate. Creators who can combine technical expertise with storytelling and adaptability will stand out. I believe the industry will increasingly value professionals who can offer complete visual solutions rather than just isolated services.
