State Analysis: Pune, Nashik, Nagpur will have most cases

Private Hospitals blame PMC for vaccine shortage

According to a new state report, Pune, Nashik, and Nagpur will have the most Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra by May 11. The analysis also hints at a shortage of oxygen and beds by that time.

By May 11, Nashik is estimated to have 95,916 active cases.  A shortage of 38,615 isolation beds, 1,535 ICU bed, 6,253 oxygen supported beds and 27 ventilators has been projected. On April 27 2021, 51,061 active cases were in Nashik.

Mumbai is predicted to have 64,507 active Covid-19 cases by May 11, down from 68,603 cases at the moment. With 4,200 oxygen supported beds, 1,129 ICU beds and 923 ventilators, Mumbai is expected to have adequate resources.

The study expressed concerns about districts with a high rate of case fatalities. These districts include Amravati, Solapur, Osmanabad, Sindhudurg and Nanded.

A state cabinet meeting was held on Wednesday, April 28, to discuss the results of this analysis. A decision to extend lockdown-like restrictions in Maharashtra until May 15 was made in this meeting. Until the transmissions subside, it is imperative to restrict large gatherings according to the state Covid task force.

According to a member of the state’s Covid-19 task force, the state is still in the second, more ferocious wave. Its peak will last longer, and the virus is more difficult to contain, leading to increasing pressures on the present health infrastructure. Although the health infrastructure has been ramped up in Mumbai, the state cannot lower its guard. Furthermore, 13-14 districts throughout Maharashtra have shown impressive recovery rates. At the same time, the healthcare infrastructure has been particularly strained in Pune, Nashik and Nagpur.

Maharashtra has 5,552 healthcare facilities, including dedicated Covid hospitals. There are nearly 3 lakh isolation beds for Covid patients, with an additional 1.3 lakh beds for patients suspected of having the virus. There are 83,966 oxygen-supported beds, 27,936 ICU beds and 11,446 ventilators available.
